Hoist the Main Sail

A few years back I used to play Osprey’s “Fighting Sail”  naval ruleset with a gaming friend.  We used some paper crafted ships printed on thick cardstock.  I recently thought to get back into that as a solo game so ordered a few of Warlord Games’ 1/700 scale Age of Sail ships from the “Black Seas” line. So far I’ve assembled 2 frigates and 2 brigs: one each for the start of American and British navies. And in the interim I am helping to playtest Too Fat Lardies sequel to their “Kiss Me Hardy” naval rules.

I’ll eventually be using them for both War of 1812 and US vs Barbary pirates games. If I can decide on how to stat up and paint a Barbary pirates games force… If I finish the builds before TFL’s new rules are released I’ll either go back to “Fighting Sail” or try “Black Seas”.

Warlords ships assemble fairly well. You can get a frigate sprue or 2 brigs sprue pretty inexpensively; most of the other ships are a bit pricier. But they do look nice.

These are some pictures of the in progress build. I finally got the American frigate rigged and ready to sail. I was dreading the rigging but found a really helpful YouTube tutorial series and with that and a great deal of patience it is feasible. But definitely paint the masts on the sprue - not being painting the ship!
